Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes follows Claire, the team leader of a Verux repair ship crew, as they service communication beacons in the far reaches of space. Alongside her crewmates Voller, Kane, Lourdes, and Nysus, Claire stumbles upon the Aurora, a luxury cruise spaceship that mysteriously vanished twenty years earlier during its maiden voyage. The novel opens with Claire being discovered in an escape pod with a fractured skull and no memory of how she got there.

Through interviews with Verux corporate investigators Max and Reed, Claire recounts the horrifying discovery of the Aurora. The crew members and guests aboard the ship died gruesomely, having experienced hallucinations and paranoia. As Claire’s team begins to suffer similar effects, Voller succumbs to the madness and kills himself. Claire is left with fragmented memories and a chilling realization that she can see ghosts.

Max, Reed, and Claire are sent back to the Aurora to retrieve bodies, where they discover Kane, the lone survivor, who has been hiding in a makeshift padded room. The truth unravels as Claire learns about Verux’s sinister plot to sabotage Aurora’s maiden voyage for financial gain, using a device that induces hallucinations and, inadvertently, ghost sightings. Claire’s fight for survival culminates in a final confrontation, leading to the death of Max and Claire’s narrow escape.

What I Liked About the Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes

Engaging and Suspenseful Plot

From the moment Claire and her crew discover the Aurora, the plot of Dead Silence is intensely engaging. The mystery of the ship’s disappearance, the gruesome deaths, and the eerie hallucinations all work together to create a suspenseful narrative. S.A. Barnes does an excellent job of slowly unveiling the horrors aboard the Aurora, making each revelation more shocking than the last.

Well-Developed Characters

The characters in Dead Silence are well-crafted and multidimensional. Claire, in particular, is a complex protagonist whose ability to see ghosts adds a fascinating layer to her character. Her struggle with this ability, coupled with her determination to uncover the truth, makes her a compelling lead. The interactions between Claire and her crew, as well as with the investigators Max and Reed, are dynamic and drive the story forward.

Effective Use of Horror Elements

This horror book effectively uses its setting and supernatural elements to create a chilling atmosphere. The gruesome deaths and the impact of hallucinations on the characters are described in vivid detail, making the horror feel very real. The Aurora itself, with its dark, empty corridors and haunting history, adds to the overall sense of dread. The use of visual and auditory hallucinations to build tension is particularly effective, making this a truly scary book.

What I Disliked About the Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes

Predictability of Certain Plot Points

Some plot twists in Dead Silence are a bit predictable, which lessens their impact. For instance, Reed’s skepticism and eventual betrayal were somewhat foreseeable, making the twists involving his character less surprising. However, this predictability does not significantly detract from the overall enjoyment of the novel.

Conclusion

Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes offers an engaging plot filled with suspense, well-developed characters, and effective horror elements. The novel’s exploration of corporate greed, combined with its supernatural and psychological horror, creates a chilling and immersive reading experience.

Overall, Dead Silence is a standout in the sci-fi horror genre. Despite minor flaws in pacing and predictability, it delivers a compelling mix of mystery, terror, and emotional depth. Stacey Kade, writing as S.A. Barnes, has crafted a story that will keep you hooked from start to finish.
